The play is divided into three acts. Act 1 has 16 scenes, act 2 has 10 scenes and act 3 has 8 scenes.
Act 1 is set in the reading room of a gentleman’s club. The room has a number of doors leading off from it. The back windows look out onto Don Gonzalo de Trevélez’s house.
Act 2 is set in Don Gonzalo’s garden. It takes place at night, with lights adorning the trees.
Act 3 is set in Don Gonzalo’s gym. As well as exercise equipment, the gym contains a collection of firearms. At the beginning of this act, Don Gonzalo appears in fencing gear.
