In the main bedroom of Landazabal’s estate house there is a double bed, a prie-dieu, an easy chair, a wardrobe, a bedside table and a combined radio and gramophone. They are distributed around the room. To one side there is a window with a shutter which looks out onto a balcony and in front of the window there is a telescope on a tripod. On one wall there is a long shelf with a line of family photos and occasional pieces of porcelain figures. On the wall above the shelf there are the sharp horns of a Sebu bull. On the wall, under a mosquito net, lies Don Agustino Landazabal; two funeral candles stand at the foot of the bed.
The action takes place on a rainy afternoon. It is a persistent heavy rain. The river has overflowed and the land is flooded. Carmen, with a rosary in her hand, recites the prayer for the dead. (less)
