Scene

The action takes place over three days in one household. There are three acts and then a final epilogue.

• act 1 is made up of four scenes
• act 2 is made up of six scenes
• act 3 is made up of nine scenes

Staging

As is characteristic of Unamuno’s theatre, El otro (The Other) requires few staging elements. All the action takes place in the same household, possibly even in one room. The following are the most notable elements to take into consideration:

• In act 1 scene 4 there is a door that The Other closes on stage. He and Ernesto sit in Renaissance-style armchairs. There is a small table between Ernesto and The Other.
• In act 3 scene 1 a full-length mirror stands at the back of the stage, covered by a screen. This act is entirely silent.
• In the epilogue the characters sit around a table.
