Staging

The entire play takes place in a living room. Over the years, the appearance of the room changes. At the beginning of the play, it looks like a typical living room from the 1900s, with a classical print on the wall and a delicate little dining table. In act 2, the walls are covered with glass cases filled with insects. The classical print has been replaced by a cubist painting and Adela’s beloved little table is covered with entomologist tools and insects. At the beginning of act 3, the room looks starkly modern. A portrait of Adela has pride of place. In the course of the act, Pedro and Julian deliberately recreate the way the living room looked in the 1900s, when Adela was young.

The men’s appearance changes as they age and they wear fashions appropriate to each decade. Similarly, in act 2 Adela looks much older.

On a number of occasions, Adela/Adelita wears a Greek tunic. (less)
