Out of the Wings

El juez de los divorcios (1610-1615), Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

Scene

This entremés (a short, one-act play) takes place in one continuous time and location.

Staging

Representative costuming would help to indicate the professions of the judge, the soldier and the barber-surgeon (who is dressed above his real role, as he is only a minor physician and he is dressed as a proper, much more respectable, doctor).  The coal-carrier is described as wearing a hood, typical of his profession. Apart from this, unless there is a desire to locate the play in a courtroom, there is no call for any particular set or staging and it could easily be performed, as it was probably intended to be, on a bare stage.

Cast information
There could be a lot of creative doubling to reduce the cast size needed, or it could be increased with more musicians, townsfolk and dancers.
