The play is divided into a prologue and seven scenes set during the following years:

  1. In the Park (1998)
  2. A Special Occasion (1995)
  3. The Letters (1996)
  4. Grandfather (1989)
  5. Early Morning (1997)

Staging

The play weaves together two audiovisual languages, as the action on stage is interspersed with seven short films projected on a screen:

  • Sequence 1 (beginning of ‘In the Park’): An old man crosses a busy road to a park. When he arrives the film becomes slightly yellow and distorted, suggesting the old man’s failing eyesight.
  • Sequence 2 (beginning of ‘A Special Occasion’): The film shows a living room filled with photographs of the extended family of Pedro and Carmen. There is also a photograph of them on their wedding day.
  • Sequence 3 (at the end of ‘A Special Occasion’): The extended family of Pedro and Carmen line up for a family photograph.
  • Sequence 4 (at the end of ‘The Letters’): A number of old people share their memories of childhood.
  • Sequence 5 (at the end of ‘Grandfather’): A number of images show Pedro looking after his granddaughter.
  • Sequence 6 (at the end of ‘Early Morning’): Elderly people are washed by carers.
  • Sequence 7 (at the end of ‘In the Park II’): Pedro looks up at the block of flats he used to live in, then down at the leaves blowing in the wind.
